Dignity, Service, Graciousness & Conviviality - Since 1927

The Girl Friends®, Inc.

The Girl Friends® Incorporated is one of the oldest and most highly respected social organizations of African American Women in the United States.

Founded in 1927 in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance, there are currently 48 Girl Friend Chapters across the United States. Girl Friends serve their communities in many capacities—as authors, professors, doctors, lawyers, business owners, U.S. Congress members, wives, and mothers.

The organization's main purpose is to:

  • Promote Friendship

  • Provide Social Activities

  • Perform Civic Services in Local Communities

  • Support National Projects

Our community service includes charitable and cultural activities.  Nationally, contributions have been made to major organizations such as the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, the Children’s Defense Fund, The Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Flint Water Crisis. In 1989, the Girl Friends Fund was founded as a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to provide financial assistance to students nationwide.

Seattle Chapter History

In 1995, Linda Dunn Gillis returned to Seattle after living in New York for twelve years. She shared her positive experience with an organization she belonged to called The Girl Friends and was inspired to start a Seattle chapter by her Albany, New York chapter.

In 1998, Linda gathered a group of twenty women to bond together through laughter and friendship. This eventually led to the formation of a remarkable women's group known as the 'Seattle Girls’.

With the assistance of her childhood friend Sheila Pitre Holmes, Linda shared that the Seattle Girls would serve as the bridge for becoming the Seattle Chapter of The Girl Friends®, Inc.

In 2006, The Albany Chapter of The Girl Friends®, Inc. sponsored the Seattle Chapter. The Seattle Chapter was then voted into the National organization in May 2006 and officially installed on October 21, 2006, as the 45th Chapter.
